Tata Steel is India’s first steel manufacturing company to receive ‘Greenco Platinum’ rating by CII Green Building Council

Jamshedpur, December 19, 2016

Tata Steel's Jamshedpur unit won the platinum rating for sustainable practices

Tata Steel has always been committed to the Tata Value of “Responsibility” and has been a trendsetter in the country in creating sustainable values for all its stakeholders. The underlying belief has always been to go beyond compliance and regulatory requirements in caring for people and the planet. In line with its vision and commitment to improve and protect environment performance as an integral way of doing business, Tata Steel has become India’s first steel manufacturing company to receive Greenco platinum rating by CII Green Building Council (GBC).

This recognition is testimony to the perseverance of Tata Steel employees and of the aspirational leadership which ensured actions for improvements resulting in getting a Platinum Rating in the first assessment. This makes Tata Steel the first integrated steel plant in the country and the first company in the Tata Group to receive Platinum Greenco rating. In addition, among the ten assessment criteria, Tata Steel has received the highest scores in eight criteria (Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation, GHG, Material Conservation, Green Supply Chain, Product Stewardship and LCA) as compared to the other Greenco rated companies.

Speaking on the achievement, Mr. T.V. Narendran, MD, Tata Steel India & South East Asia, “Greenco Rating from CII Green Building Council is a testimony towards our efforts in building an energy efficient green environment for Tata Steel Group. We believe that our vision of making steel and building sustainable communities is a major foundation of a sustainable world that can be achieved through resource efficiency and reduction of the environmental impact over the lifecycle of the products. Having achieved this leadership position in Greenco, Tata Steel realizes its responsibility to seek further daunting targets in its journey of Sustainable Business Development.”

Launched in 2012, CII's GBC conducts assessments and certification of companies on their environment friendliness and sustainability initiatives. Tata Steel started its journey for the Greenco Rating assessment in 2015 by forming a cross functional core team of Greenco champions. The core team with guidance from senior management worked for almost a year to identify gaps and implement actions in line with the Greenco requirements. The final assessment was carried out between 6th and 8th of December, 2016 by CII-IGBC. A number of innovations undertaken inside the Steel Works were showcased during the assessment such as setting up of pilot plant for extracting energy from waste using Plasma gasification technology, lab stage trials for conversion of internally generated by product gases to methane which will eliminate procurement of Propane gas.

CII- IGBC Center launched the Greenco rating system as a holistic tool to evaluate the performance of the companies in terms of their ecological impact, both for manufacturing and service sectors. The rating system covers the various aspects of environmental performance such as GHG emissions, Energy Efficiency, Green Supply Chain, Product Stewardship, Water Conservation, Renewable Energy, Waste Management, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Material Conservation. The criteria also focus on the innovation and improvement projects that the company has undertaken for improvement of ecological impacts of their entire value chain. The total score in the rating is 1000, distributed across the various criteria. The scores in the 650-749 (Gold) band indicate national best performance and > 750(Platinum) indicate world class performance.
