Tata
Steel has received the prestigious Social
Accountability (SA) 8000 Certification by Social
Accountability International (SAI), USA. This certification
is a global verifiable standard for managing the workplace in
a most effective manner by improving the workplace conditions.
The
Company has submitted one of the strongest
Corporate Sustainability Reports from emerging
economies and is India’s
Top Reporter according to the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) and Standard & Poor’s.
Tata Steel was the first company in India to have started filing
and publishing its performance as per Global Reporting Initiative
four years ago.
Tata Steel achieved a reduction in
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, specific energy consumption,
particulate matter (SPM) and in emissions of
sulphur dioxide/nitrogen oxide. Consumption of raw material
and water was brought down and waste reuse and recycling was
increased during the year.
JUSCO has also initiated several schemes to harvest
rainwater in building complexes in Jamshedpur
with technical support from Center for Science & Environment,
a New Delhi based expert agency. This effort will result in
enormous savings in water abstracted from the rivers in Jamshedpur.
The
Sukinda Chromite Mine has been
conferred the SA:
8000:2001 Certification as
a result of Tata Steel’s practice of continuous
improvement in the working conditions.
In Noamundi, a
large number of conservation measures
have been undertaken to protect the environment. These include constant
watering of mining areas to control dust, diversified afforestation
and effective plant nurturing and tree-protection measures.
