Tata Steel Limited operates opencast Chromite mines in the Sukinda valley of Orissa. Sukinda Chromite Mines is Located in Jajpur District of Orissa (longitude 85^o95'35" - 85^o47'48", Latitude 20^o59'44" - 21^o1'30"). Nearest rail head is about 60 kms and Paradeep Port & Bhubaneswar is about 140 kms by Road.

The mine is ISO: 9000 (Asia's first mine to be ISO certified), ISO: 14000, OSHAS (Occupational Safety and Health Assessment Series) and SA-8000 certified. The chrome ore is sold in both domestic and export market.

Tata Steel also mines Pyroxenite at Sukinda which is a major supplier of Pyroxenite to the Ferro Alloy Manufacturers in India.
