Tata Steel, from the very beginning, nine decades ago, has believed in returning to the people what it gets from them. The idea of sustainable development is, in fact, a key business process with the company.

Its philosophy has evolved towards working for the empowerment and integration of the tribal people into the society rather than just welfare or charity, which may increase their dependence and isolation.

Tata Steel has taken innumerous measures for enabling the tribals to attain education and seek material advancement. It has helped them hone their skills towards income generation through improved farming and irrigation, in handicrafts and in sports enabling them to compete with the majority. It has also enabled them to improve the quality of their lives with better health and hygiene. The company has further focused on the vulnerable groups within the tribal society itself, like women and children. And Tata Steel has done all this with a keen eye and sensitivity towards the self-respect, identity and culture of the indigenous people of the region.
