Uthnau

In the language of the Santhals, the word that stands approximately for uplift is 'Uthnau'. And in the areas around Jamshedpur (and around its areas of operations in Jharkhand and Orissa) this word is inextricably linked with the tools and ideas that Tata Steel weaves into the lives of the region's tribes through the Tribal Cultural Society and the Tata Steel Rural Development Society.

Picture this. A vehicle drives into a cluster of tribals -Santhal, Munda, Ho, Oraon or any other. There is an initial pause filled with the hostility and mistrust usually reserved for outsiders. But as the onlookers realize that the visitors are from Tata Steel's Tribal Cultural Society (TCS), the hostile attitude is replaced with a wave of warm camaraderie, followed by generous cups of chai and then eager participation in developmental discussions. The children in the area gather around and beam their shy and curious smiles at the visiting 'didis' and 'bhaiyyas.'

This is evidence of the faith the Company enjoys in the communities. It also stands testimony to the many years of effort that it has invested in the area, and the web of empowering activities it has carried out for those living on the very edge of modern civilization
