Responses from Mr B. Muthuraman, MD Tata Steel on the Tata Parivar scheme

Q 1. What prompted you to think in these lines ?

Ans. This is not new to Tata Steel. The company has corporate social responsibility ingrained in its system for the last nearly 100 years – since its inception. Tata Steel has always believed that the social and the envir-

onmental responsibility are of equal importance as financial responsibility – what is today called the “ Triple Bottom Line”.

Rahabilitation and resettlement of people getting displaced by large projects have not been dealt well within the country so far. Industry is as much responsible for protecting and improving the quality of life of the project affected people. ‘Tata Parivar’ has its foundation in this philosophy.

Q2. What exactly do you mean by adopting them for life? If you could throw some light on Tata Steel new programme for the displaced people in these areas ?

Ans. Each displaced family will be called Tata Parivar’. They are part of our family. We commit to improve their quality of life. Those who have the requisite qualification will be employed by us. Those who can be trained will be trained by us to make them employable. Some will get help to gain self-employment. We will monitor each family’s income at regular intervals and ensure that their income level goes up after displacement from their original land / home.

Q3. Will it be part of Tata Parivar programme or a completely separate programme altogether ?

Ans. We have done this in our other project. The ‘Tata Parivar’ scheme is an extension of what we have always been doing, with a more focused attention on on each family.
