Inspired by women heavy equipment drivers in developed countries, who walk shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts, the Company chose to train the first batch of 13 Tejaswinis to work in areas where female workers had never been deployed in the 98 - year history of Tata Steel. The initiative itself had very few parallels in Indian industry. It opened doors for them in areas such as heavy earth-moving equipment, EOT cranes, locomotive operation, material handling equipment and in mechanical maintenance. The programme taught work skills to unskilled hands, many of who had no formal education and had for years served as head load labourers, office girls and attendants.

Successive batches of Tejaswinis have been trained and now over 30 such female employees work in Raw Material Handling, Coke Plant, Equipment Maintenance Services, Engineering Services and other departments critical to the steelmaking process. Of the approximately 437 female workers at the grassroots level employed by Tata Steel, the Company intends to target all those below 40 years of age.

Educational Qualification : Masters (M.A.) in History

Earlier job : office attendant / photocopying.

Current Assignment : maintenance of cooling towers and air-conditioners

“My father and brother were both holding respectable jobs when I was forced to join as a “reja”. Often I would cry at my fate but I trusted in God and hoped change would happen. When I saw the Tejaswini circular I immediately applied. Today, rather than being called “Oh, reja”, I am addressed as “Madam” which makes me feel wonderful and proud of myself. Despite being a M.A. in History, the training given to us ensured that I would handle the task of repair and maintenance in the cooling towers”.

Jusmi Tudu

Department : Coke Plant # 1

Educational Qualification : Matriculation

Earlier job : Head Load Labour / Sweeping

Current Assignment : Mechanical Maintenance

“Apart from my job of looking after the lubrication and maintenance of machinery within the plant, if there is a shortage of personnel for manning the chute or gas cutting welding, I am immediately called upon. I have changed chute belts and worked in the screen house also”.
