Income Generation

The Noamundi unit of Tata Steel Rural Development Society encouraged Income Generation through land-based activities, allied farming activities, forestry & plantations and micro enterprises.

The thrust of its land based activities continued to be irrigation, water management and agricultural extension during the current year as well.

Land Based Activities

In order to enhance food security for the villages within its operational area, the Noamundi unit reinforced its food security project by encouraging multi-crop farming and use of modern farming techniques.

While paddy and vegetables were grown in the kharif season over 212 acres, wheat and winter vegetables covered 60 acres under the operational area of the unit.

Water Management

Noamundi has been striving to increase the irrigation cover of the agricultural land to improve productivity. Better Water Management has ensured that the ground water

was recharged and the water table raised in the reporting year. Watershed development projects were undertaken in ten villages in 2004-2005.

As a result of these efforts, 60 acres were irrigated from seven ponds, two irrigation wells and a 0.5 km sketch of a radiating channel.

Farm implements such as paddy winnows, water cans and pump sets were provided to farmers to improve their farming practices.
