GRAM SHREE MELA

Gram Sree Melas (GSM), now a brand at Jamshedpur, have their own receptivity and attention of the people not only from Jamshepdur but also from the areas in its vicinity. This year, the GSM saw a presence from Ranchi and Kolkata also. It is now regarded as the Kohinoor of Jamshedpur. This was the 13th Gram Sree Mela organized at Jamshedpur.

The Mela started on the February 3 and ended on the 12th of February 2005. It was organized at Gopal Maidan, Bistupur, Jamshedpur.

Inauguration of the Mela

Mr. George N. Sibley, Consul General, US Consulate was the Chief Guest at the inauguration ceremony. He was all praises for and amazed with at the quantum of products on displayed at the stalls. He said that such an event is unique and a noble endeavour initiated by CAPART to provide a platform to the rural artisans. He insisted that such events should be regularly organized and the artisans should be provided more opportunities for international recognition.

Mr Sibley appreciated the manner in which the stalls had been planned and praised TSRDS for taking up such an event for promoting rural craftspersonship.

Mr A N Singh, Sr. Vice President, TSRDS was also present.

130 organizations from across the country participated in the mela, which generated a revenue of Rs 51 lakhs in 10 days.

Khadi products, Carpets, Madhubani paintings and wooden furniture were among the biggest attraction at the mela.

An important objectives of the Gram Sree Mela is to generate awareness regarding the rural lifestyle and crafts skills of India.The stalls in the mela is a reflection of the same. This year, daily quiz programmes were interwoven with the cultural programmes an addition which attracted a lot of customers. Questions related to handicrafts as well as arts and culture were asked and answered by an enthusiastic audience an overwhelming response.

Cultural Programs

Cultural programmes were organised on each day during the Gram Sree Mela. These covered folk and modern dances, folk, classical and modern music, and puppet show.

Customer Feedback

Customer feedback was taken through a customer survey form designed for the purpose. 85% of the respondents said that the mela was excellent, 11% said that it was good while 4% said that it was average. The cynosure of the mela were the stalls which as many as 77% respondents liking them. 80% of the respondents were of the opinion that the duration of the mela is sufficient, while others wanted this to be extended to 15 days - 1 month. 79% of the respondents said that the variety of crafts presented at the mela was excellent.
