Water sources and related ecosystems/habitats significantly affected by use of water (EN20)
The water for industrial and domestic usage at Jamshedpur and other units is drawn from rivers/underground sources as presented in Table 5.6. These rivers are perennial in nature and water abstraction does not have any adverse impact on the eco-system. The other source of water at Jamshedpur is a captive reservoir at Dimna (Capacity-34.224 million m3 and Area-92.6 sq. km.). Dimna Lake is situated on the northeastern side of the Jamshedpur town at a distance of 12-13 kms. It is an earthen dam with masonry concrete walls constructed by the Company about three decades ago to meet the emergency water supply demand of the Works and Township, particularly during poor monsoon years. Three major drains carrying rainwater and surface run-off water from nearby villages feed this artificial impounding. However, during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons the Company also pumps water from the river Subarnarekha to Dimna Reservoir.
