Tata Steel hosts '1st Jharkhand State Ranking Table Tennis Championship'

West Bokaro, June 08, 2018

Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division is hosting the first edition of ‘Jharkhand State Ranking Table Tennis Championship’. This is being jointly organised by Tata Steel and Ramgarh District Table Tennis Association (RDTTA) from June 8-10, 2018 at Holy Cross School, West Bokaro in the Ramgarh district of Jharkhand.

The three-day mega event was inaugurated today by Mr Sanjay Kumar Singh, General Manager (Coal) in the presence of Mr Mohan Mahto, President, Rashtriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangh, Mr Jaikumar Sinha, Secretary, Jharkhand State Table Tennis Association and Mr Praveen Sinha, Chief, Human Resources Management, Tata Steel (West Bokaro).

More than 150 players from various districts of Jharkhand are participating in the championship under 10 different categories which will be played at par with national level championships.

Sharing his thought on sports, Mr Sanjay Kumar Singh said, “For us, it is a great matter of pride to host such an important event. West Bokaro Division has exceled in the field of sports. We not only encourage all interested children for various sports but also train them through our feeder centre, providing them a platform to hone their skills. Many of these children have brought laurels to the state at national and international levels. This championship will also help us in propagating Table Tennis in the area which is not so famous in this region.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mohan Mahto said, “At Tata Steel, it is our mission to promote sports, be it through organising such championships or through our feeder centre which has become a stepping stone for many national and international level players.”

Appreciating the efforts of Tata Steel in organising the championship, Mr Jaikumar Sinha said, "We are grateful to Tata Steel for organising this championship in such a grand way. This championship is no way less than any national level tournament.”

To successfully organise the championship, an organising committee has been formed comprising of officials from District Administration, Tata Steel, Jharkhand State Table Tennis Association and members of social organisations of the region.

Among others present on the occasion were Mr Anurag Dixit, Chief, Quarry SE (West Bokaro), Mr B V Sudhir Kumar, Chief, Coal Beneficiation (West Bokaro), Mr Mayank Sekhar, Chief, Quarry AB (West Bokaro) along with other officials of Tata Steel, Union and Ramgarh District Table Tennis Association.

The event is being coordinated by Mr Rajeev Ranjan Singh, Sports Organiser, Tata Steel (West Bokaro) and Mr Rakesh Mishra, Secretary, RDTTA along with other team members of the committee.

The function also marked the conclusion of the month long activities around Environment Protection through avoidance of plastic as well as the Water Conservation Campaign which was kickstarted on March 22, 2018. Various events were organised as a run-up to the function including “Greenathon for citizens of Jamshedpur”, “Article writing competition for employees”, “Painting and Debate competition for school children,  ‘Internal Idea generation session on water conservation”, “Water Vigilance Week”, “Quiz on Water Conservation and Environment Protection”. Awards were also given to schools which performed well in the “Green School Project” which is a collaboration between Tata Steel and TERI in promoting environment stewardship at grassroot level by connecting with schools and community members. All the events witnessed overwhelming participation from the citizens of Jamshedpur, school children and employees of Tata Steel wherein they pledged on avoiding plastics and conserving water. Awards were distributed to school children for the various competitions mentioned above and also for the Green School Project.
