Tata Steel launches safety mascot 'Jeevan'

Jamshedpur, December 17, 2009

~ Tata Steel aims to produce ‘Injury Free Steel’ with the launch of new safety mascot ~

Tata Steel’s resolution to strive towards being a peerless company in safety was reaffirmed today with the launch of its safety mascot – Jeevan. The event took place at the Steel Works in presence of a large gathering of the Company’s management, Union office bearers and employees.

‘Jeevan’ has been conceptualised based on suggestions from employees themselves. The mascot is thus an appealing, human-like creation, adorned with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like goggles, helmet, safety shoes and jacket – the gear which is mandatory to be put on before entering the Steel Works. The mascot will serve as a reminder to ensure safety at all levels of work in the organisation.

Safety journey at Tata Steel took a new turn in 2004 when the Company partnered M/s DuPont for its valuable expertise on safe work practices. Since then, it has been a constant aim of Tata Steel to step up safety measures for the benefit of its employees. The Company has set for itself the target of bringing down Loss Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) to 0.4 from the present 1.7 in its Goals 2012.

Besides this, Tata Steel has also set for itself a target to achieve production of “Injury Free Steel”, that is, steel which contains not even a single drop of blood. In other words, the Company wishes to ensure that in the process of steelmaking, from start – raw materials – to the finished product in both Long and Flat Products segment, none of its employees be injured.

Addressing the audience, Mr H M Nerurkar, MD, Tata Steel and chief guest on the occasion said, “Tata Steel has made its presence felt in the global circuit, several times over, through its remarkable achievements in different spheres of activity. We should now strive to become a leader in safe practices at work. To begin with, Tata Steel has been recognized internationally by ‘worldsteel’ recently for demonstrating excellence in safety and health programmes. Producing “Injury Free Steel” is not an impossible task if we are all aware of our responsibilities of ensuring safety in all our work spheres. I am certain that as safety-aware organisation, we shall soon be producing steel which has our employees’ hard labour and not their pain.” The mascot launch was made livelier with a small skit on safety, followed by a film. The film also contained a message from Mr Nerurkar, urging employees to be aware and ensure safety at work.
